Santiago and Wine Valleys

"Valleys that lie between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes give birth to a land of flavours to awaken your senses."

Overview

Santiago, the capital of Chile, is located in the geographic centre of the country, equidistant from the northern and southern borders. Lying in the middle of the fertile Mapocho and Maipo valleys, the city enjoys the permanent presence of the Andes Mountains, which bear witness to the region’s agricultural and wine-producing wealth. Santiago is a modern, cosmopolitan city with international-level infrastructure, which attracts seasoned travellers.

But not only mountains, modernity and wines are found in this region of Chile, but gastronomy and culture, highlighting the multicoloured port city of Valparaíso, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spread over more than 40 hills. For several decades the most important city in the country, it had its heyday in the 19th century, when it was the main port in this part of the Pacific.

Climate & Temperature

The climate of the central valleys is temperate with winter rains and an extended dry season (continental Mediterranean). About 80% of the precipitation is during the southern winter months (June to August) with snowfalls only normally in pre-Andean sectors. In summer it easily spikes above 30° C maximum and in winter the minimum can reach below zero.

On the coasts, it is a cool Mediterranean climate (with dry and warm summers and humid and temperate winters with an average annual temperature of 14.5 °C, being highly influenced by the Humboldt Current, which moderates temperatures in summer and winter, making the annual thermal amplitude is attenuated.
