This Coquimbo Region tour offers a broader way to experience northern Chile, bringing together coastal cities, marine wildlife, regional gastronomy and the cultural depth of the Elqui Valley in a single journey. Rather than reducing the region to one theme, the program moves through La Serena, Coquimbo, the Humboldt Penguin National Reserve and the inland valleys to reveal a territory shaped by the Pacific, the semi-arid north and a long tradition of settlement, production and travel. This Coquimbo Region tour is designed for travelers who want to combine scenic variety with a more grounded sense of place.
The strength of this itinerary lies in its contrast and continuity. In La Serena and Coquimbo, travelers encounter historic urban spaces, seafront views and some of the most recognizable landmarks in the region. From there, the route expands north toward the Humboldt Penguin National Reserve, a protected wildlife area about 120 kilometers from La Serena, made up of Choros, Damas and Chañaral islands. Visitors can disembark only on Damas Island, while the wider reserve is known for its biodiversity and marine fauna, including the species that gives the reserve its name.
The inland section adds a very different but equally important layer. Our Elqui Valley content already presents, this landscape should not be read only through astronomy, but through the wider identity of Chile’s Norte Chico, where vineyards, villages, observatories and cultural memory all belong to the same geography. That is why stops such as Vicuña, Villaseca, Montegrande and Pisco Elqui make strong sense together. The presence of Gabriela Mistral is deeply rooted in this part of the region, and the broader pisco world also connects with the Chilean Pisco Vine and Wine Cultural Landscape presented by Chile to UNESCO’s Tentative List.
Arrival at La Serena Airport no later than noon. Reception and start of a city tour through La Serena and Coquimbo, where we will explore some of the most iconic places in the conurbation, including La Recova, the Plaza de Armas and the historic center of La Serena.
Lunch will be served at a local restaurant featuring regional gastronomy. After lunch, we will continue to the Japanese Garden, a peaceful space with oriental inspiration in the heart of the city. The tour then continues to the Monumental Lighthouse, where we will stop for photos, and along Avenida del Mar, with views over the bay that connects La Serena and Coquimbo and its wide gastronomic offer.
Upon arrival in Coquimbo, we will walk along the waterfront and visit the Cross of the Third Millennium, where we can reach the viewpoint more than 200 meters above sea level and enjoy panoramic views over the La Serena–Coquimbo conurbation. We will then continue to Fort Lambert and the English Quarter of Coquimbo, an area rich in local history and port character.
At the end of the tour, we will be transferred to Hotel Club La Serena at around 6:30 p.m. for check-in, followed by dinner at the hotel and time to rest before the next day.

After breakfast, we will depart at 7:30 a.m. towards the Humboldt Penguin National Reserve, traveling north along a beautiful coastal road beside the Pacific Ocean.
The excursion includes approximately two hours of navigation around Damas Island and Choros Island, home to the most famous penguin species in Chile and other marine wildlife characteristic of the area. If conditions allow, we will disembark on Damas Island.
After returning to the mainland, lunch will be served at a rustic local restaurant featuring products from the area. On the way back, we will observe terrestrial fauna such as foxes, donkeys and llamas in their natural habitat, and later stop at a small quarry to learn about part of the mining history of the Coquimbo Region.
At the end of the excursion, we will return to La Serena at approximately 5:30 p.m. for dinner at the hotel restaurant and rest before the following day.

After breakfast at the hotel, we will depart at 9:30 a.m. for the magical Elqui Valley, one of the most distinctive valleys in the Coquimbo Region, known for its unique landscapes and privileged climate.
After driving through plantations of papayas and vineyards, our first stop will be at the Puclaro Reservoir, where we will enjoy wonderful views of the surrounding scenery. We will then continue to Vicuña, the capital of the Elqui Valley, to explore its main square and most emblematic buildings.
Later, we will stop in Villaseca, well known for its solar cookers, where we will learn how this ecological cooking system works and enjoy lunch prepared with the same technique in a local restaurant.
We will continue through the valley with a stop at the Paihuano viewpoint, offering striking views of the semi-arid landscape contrasted with green vineyards and cultivated areas. The route then continues to Montegrande, where we will learn about the life and work of Gabriela Mistral.
We will also visit a first-class artisanal pisco distillery for a tasting, and then continue to the town of Pisco Elqui to experience its local atmosphere and lifestyle. As the afternoon comes to an end, we will return to Vicuña for dinner at a restaurant before heading to an astronomical center, where we will observe the night sky through professional telescopes.
At the end of the experience, we will return to the hotel at approximately 11:30 p.m.
