This Norte Chico and Atacama tour is designed as a northbound journey through some of Chile’s most contrasting landscapes, linking astronomy, valley culture, archaeology, coastal wildlife and high-altitude desert in a single route. It begins around La Serena and the Elqui Valley, a landscape that our astronomy guide to Chile places within northern Chile’s exceptional dark-sky geography, while the Elqui article makes clear that the valley should also be read through pisco, vineyards, villages and cultural memory rather than through stargazing alone. What gives this itinerary real character is the way it reveals the wider Norte Chico as more than a corridor between destinations. In Fray Jorge National Park, the landscape shifts into one of northern Chile’s strangest ecological contrasts: a protected forest pocket preserved inside a semi-arid coastal region, linked to persistent fog moisture from the Pacific system. That surprise is then followed by the archaeological dimension of the wider region, something KMS Travel’s Elqui Valley piece explicitly connects with Valle del Encanto, pre-Hispanic remains and the deeper historical texture of the Norte Chico.
Farther north, the program opens into a more dramatic Andean register through Nevado Tres Cruces National Park and the Route of the Six Thousand. Sources describe this high-altitude landscape through the Salar de Maricunga and the Santa Rosa and Negro Francisco lagoons, emphasizing both its wetlands and its wildlife, including vicuñas and flamingos, while also stressing the altitude, cold and need for acclimatization from Copiapó. That final mountain arc is what gives the program its full breadth: this is not only a valley journey or an astronomy escape, but a true Norte Chico and Atacama tour that moves from observatories and village culture to relic forest, archaeology, whale-watching coastlines and the upper desert.
Passengers may arrive at La Serena Airport from 2:00 p.m. onwards, where a representative will be waiting with a private vehicle for the transfer to the hotel in La Serena.
At sunset, we will enjoy an astronomical experience at Collowara Observatory, which features a variety of telescopes on outdoor terraces and in its central dome, as well as specialized guides and audiovisual rooms that show the sky in real time. Located approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes from the hotel, the experience lasts around 2 hours.

After breakfast at the hotel, private transport will be waiting to begin a journey through the Elqui Valley and its main attractions. One of the most distinctive valleys in the Coquimbo Region, Elqui is known for its unique landscapes and privileged climate.
From La Serena, we will head toward the Andes to reach the Puclaro Reservoir, where we will have time for photos with the reservoir and surrounding scenery. We will then continue along the valley road, stopping at one of its viewpoints to appreciate the contrast between the semi-arid landscape and the green mantle of vineyards and cultivated land.
The route continues to Pisco Elqui, where we will learn about Chilean pisco production and enjoy a tasting of this ancestral spirit. Afterwards, we will visit Montegrande, home to the Gabriela Mistral House School Museum, to learn more about the life and work of the poet. We will then continue to Villaseca, well known for its solar cookers, where we will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. The tour will end in Vicuña, where we will visit the Plaza de Armas and its emblematic buildings before returning to La Serena.

Day 3 reveals another side of the Coquimbo Region with a visit to Fray Jorge National Park, a biosphere reserve known for its extraordinary microclimate, which allows a dense forest and lush vegetation to exist within the semi-arid environment of northern Chile.
We will enjoy a walk along a trail suitable for all types of travelers, allowing us to appreciate this remarkable natural setting. Afterwards, we will continue to the town of Barraza, which still preserves much of its 19th-century colonial character, before heading to Valle del Encanto National Monument.
There, we will observe important archaeological remains from pre-Hispanic cultures, including petroglyphs, pictographs associated with the Molle culture, and cup-marked stones that preserve the traces of ancestral occupation in the area. Lunch will be served at a typical local restaurant. At the end of the excursion, we will return to La Serena.

At 7:00 a.m., we will depart north toward the Atacama Region and its capital, Copiapó, traveling 338 km along Route 5 in a journey of approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes. This transfer will become a true excursion, as we will stop at Chañaral de Aceituno, a coastal village famous for whale watching.
There, we will enjoy a navigation of approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to observe whales and other characteristic marine wildlife of the area. After the excursion, lunch will be served at a typical coastal restaurant. Along the way, we will also have the chance to spot terrestrial fauna and cross the driest desert in the world, a landscape closely associated with the flowering desert, a natural phenomenon that may appear between September and October under favorable conditions.
We will arrive at the hotel in Copiapó at approximately 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at the hotel.

After breakfast at the hotel, at 10:00 a.m. private transport will take us inland through the desert dunes on the way to the coast. Along the route, we will visit the famous San José Mine, known as the site of the dramatic rescue of 33 miners.
We will also explore the dune fields of Atacama before continuing to Bahía Inglesa, where we will enjoy Pacific gastronomy over lunch with views of the bay. On the return journey, we will take a scenic coastal route toward Puerto Viejo, where the desert meets the sea in one of the most striking landscapes of the region.
We will return to the hotel in Copiapó at around 6:00 p.m.

The final excursion day is one of the most dramatic in the program. This 12-hour journey departs from the hotel in Copiapó at 8:00 a.m. and returns at 8:00 p.m. along the famous Route of the Six Thousand, where the Andes reach some of their greatest elevations, with several peaks exceeding six thousand meters.
During the excursion, we will visit extraordinary high-altitude landscapes, including Santa Rosa Lagoon within Nevado Tres Cruces National Park, as well as sectors of the Maricunga Salt Flat and major mountain reliefs such as Cerro Isla. The park offers a striking scenery of snow, salt flats and lagoons, while the Tres Cruces massif stands out for its three independent summits above six thousand meters.
This high-Andean environment is also rich in wildlife. Along the way, we may observe flamingos, geese, ducks, guanacos and vicuñas, all of which enrich the unique ecosystem of the lagoons and salt flats. The excursion includes a picnic lunch suitable for altitude. Once the mountain journey is over, we will return to the hotel in Copiapó.
